On Tuesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers were just three outs away from their first World Series championship in franchise history.
After homering in the top of the 12th, the Brewers held a 3-2 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. They needed three outs to win the game, but failed to record any.
Junior Caminero led off against Antonio Senzatela and reached on an error by third baseman Joey Ortiz, who bounced his throw to first baseman Jake Bauers. With the tying run aboard and the winning run at the plate, Pat Murphy brought in Shane Drohan out of the bullpen.
Drohan, who hadn't pitched in nearly two weeks, clearly didn't have it. He surrendered four straight singles, allowing two runs to score and the Rays to win the game.
According to OptaSTATS, Milwaukee became the first team in MLB history to be three outs away from a World Series title and not record a single out.
After giving Tampa Bay new life, the Brewers will try to close out the series in Game 5 on Wednesday behind Jacob Misiorowski, who was surprisingly not used to finish off Game 4. Time will tell if that decision comes back to haunt Milwaukee.
