The Milwaukee Brewers are up 1-0 in the World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays, and Aaron Ashby was once again amazing for the Brewers in Game 1.
Ashby has pitched in seven games in this postseason and has gone more than one inning in his last five outings. He has two three-inning outings, two saves, a win and two holds. He has been unreal so far and has yet to allow a run through 14 innings.
The longest streak of scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason is 16 innings by Andrew Miller in 2016. Miller's streak ended in Game 4 of the World Series against the Chicago Cubs, and his next outing ended up with him giving up two more earned runs in Game 7.
Ashby had a strong case to be the National League Championship Series MVP, but Jake Bauers ultimately took home the hardware. However, Ashby's contributions cannot be overstated.
He has issued three walks and given up four hits during this run, and has worked around some traffic. He has left a couple of runners stranded at third base, but in Game 1 of the Fall Classic, he was perfect.
Ashby came up as a starter, but some injuries ended up getting him moved to the bullpen. However, that experience as a starter has allowed him to be a fit in this multi-inning role he is in.
He has been so good that the Brewers don't even need to get long outings out of their starters. Ashby is a weapon when it comes to bridging the gap between the starter and Megill. In fact, he sometimes is doing so well that Megill doesn't even need to come in and close the game. Murphy has shown he's fine with letting Ashby roll through the ninth as well.
