On Wednesday, New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone all met with reporters.
Cashman revealed that he had agreed to a new contract with the Yankees to return as the general manager for a 30th season. The details of the contract are unknown, as Cashman said he has to iron out some minor details. Naturally, reporters asked where the team stands on an extension with Aaron Boone.
Steinbrenner said the Yankees have not discussed an extension with Boone but he is considering it. Steinbrenner noted that extensions are not really the way the Yankees do things, but deflected blame for how the season ended away from Boone and Cashman.
"I thought Boone managed a good season, especially with the pitching staff," Steinbrenner said on Wednesday. "We had a lot of additions and subtractions throughout the course of the season. Our bullpen was absolutely exhausted by the end of the season. He got us to the playoffs, and the bottom-line is the players didn't live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs."
Boone is the first manager in Yankees history to get a 10th season as manager without winning a championship. He took the team to the World Series in 2024, but has failed to deliver a title.
Steinbrenner was complimentary of Boone in his press conference, but also acknowledged the need to win.
