Jazz Chisholm Jr. was not in the starting lineup for Game 3 of the American League Division Series, but he did get a pinch-hit appearance.
He popped out to first base in the seventh inning and was booed on his way back to the dugout.
"Itβs just confusing because itβs the playoffs and weβre trying to win games,β Chisholm said of the boos after the game, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner.
βSo, youβre booing a guy thatβs playing currently, trying to help the team win," he added. "And Iβm hearing boos instead of trying to hype guys up, you know what I mean?β
Former Yankees starting first baseman Anthony Rizzo was not too fond of Chisholm's comments.
"It surprises you that you got booed?" Rizzo said on "Ross and Rizzo Unfiltered" on Tuesday. "What do you mean? You've played there for three-plus years now. You've seen (Anthony) Volpe get run out of town. You've seen (Aaron Judge) get booed. You've seen Stanton get booed. It surprises you that you got booed? That's just not the right way to answer questions."
In Chisholm's defense, he did say he took no offense to the boos, and understands that Yankees fans will boo anyone.
"It didnβt hurt me,β he said. βBecause, like I said, Iβve seen Aaron Judge get booed here, too. Who am I? Thatβs a three-time MVP.β
However, Chisholm opened himself up to criticism when he talked a big game in the offseason. He had 31 home runs and 31 steals last season, and came into his contract year talking about winning MVP and having a 50-homer, 50-steal season. Instead, he had one of the worst years of his career.
