Mason Miller blew a one-run lead in the ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, giving the Brewers a 2-0 series lead.
Miller was asked to get six outs and got through the eighth inning easily. However, in the ninth inning, after getting one quick out, he issued back-to-back walks before recording the second out. He then walked one more batter to load the bases for Jackson Chourio. The Brewers' young star walked it off, and Miller and the Padres will now have to climb out of a 2-0 hole.
"Terrible," Miller told The San Diego Union-Tribune's Annie Helibrunn when asked how he feels after the loss. "I didn't do my job today ... The cardinal rule is pretty much: You don't beat yourself. And I beat myself today. I mean, a base hit with nobody on doesn't win them the game. A base hit after you walk the bases loaded does."
Miller is taking all of the blame for the loss, and understands that in his position, mistakes mean losses.
"Failure in my role is really hard to move past when you look at it because most of the time when you fail, you lose," Miller said after the game, per ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "Other spots, you get another chance, but that's part of it."
The Padres wasted a great start from their ace Michael King while the Brewers go to San Diego having won the two games in which they had their two best starters. The Game 2 loss could be too much to come back from, as the Brewers now only have to win one more game, and should have Jacob Misiorowski for one of them if they don't win Game 3.
