The New York Mets have a very important offseason ahead of them.
The Mets cannot start making impactful additions just yet, but that does not mean transactions around the league are at a halt. While big-league free agents won't hit the open market until after the World Series, eligible minor league players can elect free agency right now.
Kevin Herget elected free agency from the Mets on Tuesday. Herget only threw one inning for the Mets in the big leagues this season, but pitched in 19 minor league games for the Mets. He pitched in Triple-A, High-A, Single-A and the Florida Complex League.
He had a 2.97 ERA with 25 strikeouts in the minor leagues. He made eight starts and threw a total of 33 1/3 innings. Herget has a 4.13 career ERA in the big leagues and has pitched in 32 games. He is 35 years old and still has not established himself as a big leaguer.
He was drafted in 2013 and made his MLB debut in 2022. He may be the best signing in an international league like the KBO or NPB. It's possible a different team takes a chance on him or sees him as minor league depth, but overall, losing him is not a huge loss for the Mets.
