Roman Anthony exited Tuesday's game against the New York Yankees in the sixth inning after his hand flared up.
After the game, manager Chad Tracy revealed that Anthony's hand became uncomfortable and the team had to make a move. That move was pinch-hitting for him with Andruw Monasterio in a 2-0 game. The Red Sox lost Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series, and now they have to win Game 2 to keep the season alive. Whether they will have Anthony is the question on every fan's mind.
"At this hour: Red Sox still 'assessing the situation' when it comes to Roman Anthony and determining whether they need to replace him on the roster," reported MassLive's Chris Cotillo on Wednesday, with under seven hours before Game 2.
The timing of Anthony's injury is terrible. If the Red Sox think he will be fine in a day or two, then replacing him on the roster would be a terrible idea. Replacing him on the wild card roster would make him unavailable for the American League Division Series as well.
However, keeping him on the roster, but with him being unavailable for Game 2 and a potential Game 3, would essentially leave the Red Sox with an unusable roster spot. Wednesday is a must-win game for the Red Sox, and using a roster spot on a player who cannot play could come back to hurt them.
