Alec Bohm is having a great second half for the Philadelphia Phillies, but he will be a free agent after the season ends.
Bohm is slashing .306/.366/.457 in the second half, and the Phillies have him playing first base with Luis Arraez at second base and Bryson Stott at third base. However, if the Phillies lose both Arraez and Bohm in free agency, they will likely move Stott back to second base and Bryce Harper back to first base. That will leave them needing an outfielder and a third baseman. Joey Ortiz could be a great fit for the Phillies.
For most of the year, Ortiz was the worst hitter in baseball, but his glove is so good the Brewers kept playing him at shortstop, sharing time with David Hamilton and Luis Rengifo on the left side of the infield. However, the Brewers called up Cooper Pratt to be the everyday shortstop and moved on from Rengifo, meaning Ortiz and Hamilton would share third base. Hamilton spent time on the injured list, and Ortiz took advantage of the opportunity to play every day.
Since Partt made his debut on June 16, Ortiz is slashing .307/.343/.505 with eight home runs. He has a .902 OPS since the start of July and is arguably the best defensive third baseman in baseball, so why would the Brewers trade him?
Well, the Brewers have been known to sell high on players. Ortiz is under club control through 2029, and the team will need to make room for Jesus Made, the game's top prospect. Made could make his debut next season, potentially earning the opening-day third base job.
No matter how good Ortiz has been, he is the likeliest infielder on the team to be let go. Pratt has already signed an extension, and they are not moving on from Brice Turang. Made is set up to sign his own extension soon and will be a staple in Milwaukee for years to come. Ortiz would be a great fit in Philadelphia now that he's found his swing.
However, he is not going to be easy to acquire, given the fact that he's having a career year and has multiple years of control.
