Jazz Chisholm Jr. is dealing with a thumb sprain and has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the New York Yankees.
Chisholm has been a great addition ever since the Yankees traded for him in 2024. His injury has come at an inopportune time, as the regular season is winding down, and there is limited time remaining for him to go on a rehab assignment if he feels the need to play in rehab games.
According to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch, Chisholm thinks he will be back in time to play in some regular-season games before the Yankees get into the postseason.
"Jazz Chisholm Jr. (right thumb sprain) said he expects to play before the end of the regular season," Hoch wrote on X on Thursday. "He anticipates returning when the Yankees are back from their upcoming road trip."
Anthony Volpe is up from the minor leagues with Chisholm hurt. This could be the Yankees' first look at their potential middle infield for next season. Chisholm will be a free agent after the season, and if he signs elsewhere, Volpe will have a chance to claim the second base job.
Volpe has big shoes to fill offensively. Offense has not been a strong suit for Volpe in the big leagues. Meanwhile, Chisholm was hot at the plate after struggling for most of the season. Since Aug. 9, Chisholm is slashing .313/.398/.835 and has 10 stolen bases. Volpe was swinging a hot bat himself in Triple-A, so hopefully that will translate to the big leagues now.
Since his demotion, he is slashing .284/.381/.642 and has mostly played second base. He also has 10 home runs in that span.
