Boston Red Sox broadcaster Will Flemming made some controversial remarks on Sunday during the Red Sox's 16-1 loss to the New York Yankees on WEEI radio.
The Red Sox were being blown out, and while the Yankees were leading by six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. stole second and third base with Austin Wells at the plate. Flemming called Chisholm a "bush league" player after saying he would like to see Jovani Morán "drill" Wells in retaliation. Wells hit a home run three pitches later, and as he rounded the bases, Flemming suggested Morán fight Chisholm.
"I’m going to say it,” Flemming said later in the inning, “he plays the game the wrong way.”
Well, Flemming's comments have been all the talk on Monday morning, and he issued an apology on X.
"Since I have been receiving nonstop calls and threats, I felt like it was important to hop back on here and say: My comments during yesterday's broadcast crossed a line. I’m emotional and a fan at heart and that bled into the broadcast," Flemming wrote on Monday.
"I meant no disrespect to the Yankees players or organization," he continued. "I could and should have used different words. These rivalry games get me fired up; I apologize for letting the emotion of the moment get the best of me."
Every so often, something like this happens and the unwritten rules of baseball become a hot topic. Many baseball purists would agree that Chisholm stealing second and third base up by six runs in the eighth inning when the opponent is not holding him on is wrong. However, not everyone agrees with that sentiment.
The Red Sox and Yankees seem destined to meet again in a best-of-three wild card series, so there's a chance the Red Sox will be dealing with Chisholm again soon.
