Austin Wells made history in the New York Yankees' 16-1 win on Sunday
Wells did not start the game at catcher, but came in to pinch-hit for Ali Sánchez in the sixth inning. The Yankees were leading 5-0 when Wells came in, and he immediately added a run on a sacrifice fly. However, it's what he did in the eighth inning that made history.
Chisholm hit a two-run home run off Jovani Morán with no outs in the eighth inning. Then, later in the inning, he hit another two-run home run off Andruw Monasterio with two outs. Even though his second homer came off a position player, it still counts and extended the lead to 15 runs.
According to OptaSTATS, Wells became the first player in MLB history to pinch-hit and then hit two home runs in a single inning. Wells has not had the best season. In fact, he has been a bad hitter all year, but he has seen some better results as of late.
He is losing some playing time, but he does have a .897 OPS in the last seven games. He has just 19 at-bats in that span, so it is a very small sample size.
