Los Angeles Dodgers World Series champion Matt Beaty announced his retirement on Tuesday on Instagram.
Beaty was not a superstar for the Dodgers, but was one of their own draft picks. They selected him in the 12th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, and he played three seasons with them in the big leagues. He appeared in 556 games for the Dodgers, helping them win a World Series in 2020. The team traded him to the San Diego Padres in 2022.
The player the Dodgers got in return was River Ryan, who at the time was still an infielder as well as a pitcher. More than four years later, he was a key piece in the trade that brought Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers.
Ryan was MLB Pipeline's No. 68 prospect at the time of the Skubal deal and satisfied the Detroit Tigers' desire to add pitching in a deal for Skubal.
Ryan started four games for the Dodgers in 2024, posting a 1.33 ERA. However, he underwent Tommy John Surgery in August of 2024 and missed the 2025 season. He is still seen as a talented pitching prospect, even though he is 28 years old now.
Beaty may not have been a household name, but if the Dodgers three-peat and Skubal plays a big role, he will have been integral in making that happen.
