The Cincinnati Reds have placed Eugenio Suárez on waivers, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Suárez was an All-Star last year, hitting 49 homers and posting an .824 OPS. He was sensational for the Arizona Diamondbacks and was one of the hottest names at the trade deadline. He was sent to the Seattle Mariners, where he struggled. He signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Reds in the offseason, returning to the team he spent a chunk of his career with.
Suárez has not had a great season and is owed nearly $3 million for the rest of the year. By placing him on waivers, the Reds are hoping someone claims him and they get his salary off the books. It's likely he clears waivers and remains with the team, but there are a few teams that could be interested.
Teams have 48 hours to make a claim, and priority is in reverse standings order.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays enter play on Thursday 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot. Even though he's struggled, Suárez does have 19 homers. That would be second on the Blue Jays. They have hit the third-fewest home runs in baseball, and Suárez could be a solid bat for them to add. He has been solid against right-handed pitching and could platoon with Kazuma Okamoto.
Arizona Diamondbacks
A return to Arizona is not the wildest idea, considering nobody knows what is going on with Ketel Marte. The Diamondbacks are one game back of a wild card spot entering play on Thursday, and could use some help in the lineup. Suárez was great for them last year, and adding him for the stretch run could yield good results.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have the last priority on waivers, so the only way they could get Suárez is if nobody else puts in a claim and they do. However, they hit the least home runs in baseball, and Suárez could be off much use to them off the bench and even get some starts at third base or as a designated hitter. David Hamilton and Joey Ortiz provide very little power at third base, and SUárez could bring some pop to a power-needy lineup.
