The Boston Red Sox made a bold choice to start Kristian Campbell on the big league roster at the start of last season.
He had played in just 19 Triple-A games to that point, but got off to a solid start in The Show. He quickly signed an eight-year, $60 million deal, and it looked like the Red Sox had a future star. However, Campbell's numbers quickly declined, and his defense at second base became a real issue.
He hit below .200 in his final 57 big league games and was sent down to Triple-A. There, the Red Sox gave him some looks at first base, but ultimately decided to move him to the outfield full time. His offense was still a work in progress this year, and he was struggling to hit through the first four months of the minor league season. However, in July, things took a turn.
In July, Campbell slashed .379/.507/.552. He had two homers and 13 walks, while also picking up 11 RBIs in 19 games. It was his best month as a hitter since being demoted, and he is making a strong case to be called back up. He was named the WooSox Player of the Month.
He is 2-for-10 to start August, but overall, he has shown improvement. The Red Sox are currently leaning on Jarren Duran, who has not hit well this season. Campbell could give the team a different look in the final outfield spot as they await Roman Anthony's return.
He has not played in the infield at all this season, but it could be something the Red Sox consider if they want him back in the big leagues. With Curtis Mead hurt, second base could be a fit for Campbell, although it is unlikely the Red Sox move him back there.
