The New York Mets have already traded away Freddy Peralta, A.J. Minter, Brooks Raley and Huascar Barzobán, and more trades are expected to come before Monday's 6 p.m. EST trade deadline.
Among the players the Mets could deal away is Clay Holmes. He has missed most of the season after fracturing his fibula after taking a comebacker off his leg. Last year was his first year as a starter, and he had a 3.53 ERA. This season, he had a 2.39 ERA through nine starts.
He is currently on a rehab assignment, and nearly every contender has reportedly scouted him during that. According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly pursuing him as the deadline approaches.
The Brewers lost the Tarik Skubal sweepstakes to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and adding Holmes could help them close the talent gap between the two teams. The Brewers have the best record in baseball, but they did last year too, and the Dodgers swept them in the National League Championship Series.
The Brewers already have an elite rotation, but adding Holmes would help them better compete with the Dodgers. Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison, Logan Henderson and Holmes would be an elite postseason rotation. It would certainly be able to compete with Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Shohei Ohtani or Tyler Glasnow.
Holmes gets a ton of ground balls and may be even better in Milwaukee than he was in New York to start the season. The Brewers infield is elite. Joey Ortiz leads all third basemen in defensive runs saved, Brice Turang is a Platinum Glover and rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt has just one error on the season.
That defense behind Holmes could make him a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the season.
