The Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants are heading in opposite directions, with the Braves 20 games ahead of the Giants in the National League standings.
Not surprisingly, the two sides were able to work out a deal prior to the trade deadline. On Sunday, San Francisco sent veteran right-handed starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to Atlanta for minor league reliever Anthony Molina.
Mahle, 31, has struggled this season, going 3-9 with a 5.13 ERA. He's been better lately, however, with a 3.79 ERA over his last seven starts, looking more like the pitcher who had a 2.18 ERA for the Texas Rangers last season.
Accordingly, the Braves are hoping he can provide innings and depth for their injured starting rotation. If his recent turnaround continues, he could prove to be a valuable addition for the next few months before he hits free agency.
Molina, 24, has three years of Major League experience but has not pitched well, posting a horrendous 6.89 ERA in 55 appearances. Perhaps San Francisco's more pitching-friendly environment will help him straighten things out.
