The Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers seem destined to meet again in the National League Championship Series, and after seeing how things went down last year, the Brewers may want to push all of their chips in at this year's deadline.
The Brewers have a superstar ace in Jacob Misiorowski and an elite No. 2 in Kyle Harrison. However, they just lost Brandon Woodruff, and the trio of Robert Gasser, Brandon Sproat and Shane Drohan is good, but inexperienced. With Tarik Skubal's name floating around in trade rumors, The Athletic predicted the Brewers would land him.
"Skubal sure would look good beside Jacob Misiorowski at the top of the Brewers rotation, wouldn’t he?" wrote The Athletic's Andy McCullough on Monday. The franchise hasn’t reached the World Series since 1982. The team posted the best record in baseball last year and still got trounced by the Dodgers in the NLCS. Now might be the time to go for broke."
The first hurdle with a Skubal trade is figuring out if the Detroit Tigers even want to trade him. They are still in the postseason race, and trading Skubal could ruin that chase. Also, if they do trade him, would they want a prospect haul or a package that lets them compete this year while also landing some top prospects?
Regardless, the Brewers have the farm system and big league depth to make such a trade. It would go against the grain of everything they believe in, but they've made moves like this in the past on rare occasions. Adding CC Sabathia would be the closest thing to adding Skubal that they have done.
