The New York Yankees have struggled to get production out of the catcher spot this season, and J.C. Escarra deserves another shot in the big leagues.
Escarra has played in 32 games for the Yankees this season, and he has not been great. He is slashing .188/239/.271. Despite how bad he has been in limited big league action, he has a higher batting average than Austin Wells and has an OPS just one point lower than his.
Escarra has been crushing Triple-A pitching, and at this point, it is not going to hurt the Yankees to give him another shot. He has a .333/.390/.667 slash line in Triple-A this season. He has been up and down between the Yankees and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year.
Since the last time the Yankees sent him down, on June 26, he has 17 hits in 13 games. The Yankees are reportedly exploring the catcher market at this year's trade deadline, but before they swing a major trade, it is certainly worth giving Escarra another look.
He played in 40 games in the big leagues last year and posted a .629 OPS. His numbers overall are not great, but given how bad Wells has been, Escarra may actually be a slight upgrade. Defensively, he ranks in the 86th percentile for blocks above average this season. His 1.91 pop time ranks in the 74th percentile.
If the Yankees want to make a World Series run, they need to get better production from their backstops. With Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton out, the offense does not have much room for error.
