The need for bullpen arms was increased when Brad Keller suffered his season-ending injury. However, a recent report from MLB insider Jeff Passan suggests that Mason Miller is "definitely" available, opening the door for the Phillies to go get him.
Passan made it clear that just because Miller was available does not mean he will get dealt. He is the best closer in the game, and there aren't many closers in the league who would push Duran into a setup role. Miller has a 0.89 ERA on the season and is close to a guaranteed win as a team can get at a closer.
He leads the National League with 25 saves, and actually has more saves than hits allowed on the year. He has 75 strikeouts to just 14 walks issued. The Phillies need arms to bridge the gap between their starters and Duran in the postseason, and adding Miller would suddenly make Duran the second-best leverage arm on the team.
The Phillies want to make a run at the World Series, and to do that, they will need to go through the Los Angeles Dodgers and their star-studded lineup. Miller has the ability to give a team multiple innings out of the bullpen, and being able to deploy him and Duran for the final three innings of a game could be lethal.
It would not be cheap to acquire Miller, but he is exactly the kind of arm that can help the Phillies get back to the World Series. He thrives in pressure situations, and so far, there has been no lineup that has actually gotten him to blow a save. The Phillies would have to give up a haul to get him, but it would be worth it.
