One of the Los Angeles Dodgers' biggest moves of the offseason was signing three-time Reliever of the Year Edwin Díaz.
Díaz had surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow and has been on the injured list since April 20. He is one of the best relievers in baseball, and the Dodgers would be getting a huge boost with him back. Dave Roberts did not rule out Díaz returning for the series against the New York Mets over the weekend. It would be fitting that his first series back is against his former team.
Díaz signed a three-year, $69 million deal with the Dodgers after winning the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award last season. He had a 1.63 ERA in 62 outings and recorded 28 saves. He had pitched in just seven games for the Dodgers before his injury and had a 10.50 ERA.
It's possible that his injury was impacting his performance before the Dodgers placed him on the injured list and he had surgery. He has looked great in his rehab outings, but that is against minor league hitters. In his four rehab appearances for Single-A Ontario, he has seven strikeouts and has allowed just one hit.
Tanner Scott has been the Dodgers' closer this year, and he has bounced back in a big way after a rough 2025 season. Díaz figures to take back the closer role, but that means the Dodgers would have Scott as his setup man. SCott and Díaz to end a game is a lethal combination.
