The New York Mets have the second-worst record in the National League and are poised to be sellers at this year's trade deadline.
Among the players the Mets could look to trade away is Freddy Peralta. He will be a free agent in a few months, and he still has some trade value despite having a rough season. His ERA is up to 5.01, but he is a two-time All-Star who could benefit from a change of scenery.
Peralta started against the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee on Monday night and was asked about the possibility of a trade. The Brewers, like many teams, could be looking for a starter at this year's trade deadline, and Peralta could be a fit.
"I don't know," Peralta said when asked if he knows what might happen to him between now and the trade deadline. "I can't control that, and that's front office stuff."
Like many players at this point in the season, Peralta knows that he could be moved. He has a very affordable contract for a rental and will be hitting the open market soon. The Mets' chances of making the postseason are extremely slim, and getting anything out of Peralta at this point would be a win for David Stearns.
Teams could be willing to take a chance on Peralta, a veteran starter with postseason experience. Perhaps he would be better suited in a smaller market. He has proven to be a durable arm who could help out many rotations. Additionally, perhaps a new coaching staff can figure out why he's struggling and get him back on track.
