The Boston Red Sox's season seems to be a lost cause, and Jarren Duran could be a valuable trade chip at the deadline.

The 2024 All-Star's trade value may be at an all-time low, but it may be the best time for the Red Sox to trade him. He still has two more years of club control, and his role in the Red Sox's future is unclear. Between Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu, the long-term plan in the outfield is set. At the very best, Duran is a fourth outfielder for the Red Sox if everyone is healthy.

There was plenty of trade interest in Duran during the offseason and last year's trade deadline, but the Red Sox held on to him. Now, he is struggling, hitting just .197, and a fresh start could do him well. The Athletic's Jim Bowden tabbed Duran as the best fit for the Houston Astros at this year's deadline.

Bowden pointed to the Astros' strong clubhouse environment as a reason Duran could thrive there. He has shown flashes of being the player he was in 2024, but has failed to be a consistent force for the Red Sox. He led the league in doubles and triples in 2024 and led the American League in triples last year. This year, he has a total of just 24 extra-base hits.

The Astros desperately need outfield help, and Duran could be a cheap addition with high upside. If he can turn things around on a new team, he has the potential to be a force in the second half. The Astros are two games under .500 entering play on Monday, but they are just 2 1/2 games back of the American League West lead, and one game out of a wild card spot.

They do not figure to be sellers at the deadline, but may not take any huge swings either. Duran seems like the kind of player they could go after to help this year and serve as a piece they can rely on next season if they do not make the postseason.
