When will Boston Red Sox fans see Roman Anthony back on the field over at Fenway Park?
Unfortunately, that answer is not clear. Anthony is still dealing with the impact of his partially torn ring finger CMC ligament with no sign of an imminent return. For Anthony to get back into the mix, he needs to start swinging a bat, begin a hitting progression, progress to the point of facing live pitching, and then get at-bats in a minor league rehab assignment. It's going to take time and each of these steps are going to take time.
With the type of injury he has, you also can't rush it. If you do, then the clock is just going to restart if the ligament isn't properly healed.
On Monday, Anthony joined the "Baseball Isn't Boring" podcast and talked about the "ridiculous" injury and how he is doing in his rehab.
βItβs been a long, long slow process,β Anthony said. βEverything sucks, to be honest. The team leaves on the road, and itβs like, βDang, I miss being around the guys.β You have two days where you feel like itβs encouraging, then you have a really (expletive) two days, and youβre like, βOh, man, where am I at?ββ
"... Itβs the same kind of coming through, as I push through and kind of extend through in a sense,β Anthony continued. βIβm seeing progress and it feels like itβs getting stronger. Feeling like I got more there to kind of support the hand and then the ring finger. So, positive in that sense. ... I want to play baseball. Iβm over sitting here and waiting on a finger,β Anthony added. βLike, it sounds ridiculous to me.β
