The Boston Red Sox are among the league's most disappointing teams of the 2026 Major League Baseball season so far.
Unfortunately, it's hard to argue against that fact.
Boston won 89 games last season and is currently in last place in the American League East through two months at 25-33. On paper, the Red Sox should be much better than they have been. But games aren't won and lost by what the roster says on paper. There is plenty of talent in Boston, but things haven't clicked yet.
The Red Sox won two straight games against the Cleveland Guardians over the weekend and will begin a critical stretch of games on Tuesday against American League East opponents. Boston's next nine games will come against American League East foes. The club has three games scheduled against the Baltimore Orioles, followed by three games against the New York Yankees, and then three games against the Tampa Bay Rays. This stretch of games could be the difference between turning this thing around or digging a hole too big to come out of.
Obviously, Red Sox fans are frustrated and surprised with how the season has gone so far. Unsurprisingly, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow sounds like he's in a similar boat.
"It bothers me incredibly strongly,” Breslow said of the season so far to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. “It keeps me up at night. It consumes my thinking. If it didn’t, then I shouldn’t be doing this job.”
Boston has two straight wins under its belt, but also is missing two of its best players in Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet. Can the club actually turn the season around? These next two weeks will be critical.
