Are Boston Red Sox Fans Wrong About Craig Breslow?

The Boston Red Sox haven't had a good season so far, to say the least.

Boston has 52 games under its belt right now and the club is 22-30 and in last place in the American League East. That's obviously not up to the expectations of the fanbase — or the club itself. The Red Sox were active this past offseason and bolstered the starting rotation with Ranger Suárez and Sonny Gray. Boston also added Willson Contreras, who looks like a legit All-Star candidate for the 2026 season.

Naturally, with the Red Sox struggling, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has taken some serious heat. A lot of it is deserved. He is the decision maker and didn't add enough offense or clear up the outfield logjam. Also, he swung a few bad deals, including the Caleb Durbin-Kyle Harrison trade. But arguably, it's not all his fault.

On paper, this Red Sox team should be better than it has been. The rotation, bullpen, and defense have all been spectacular. There are plenty of guys on the offensive side of the ball simply not playing up to their standards. Carlos Narváez is batting .218 right now. Marcelo Mayer is batting .214 right now. Trevor Story was batting .206 before getting hurt. Durbin is hitting .163. Jarren Duran is batting .193 right now. Plus, both Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet is on the Injured List.

There's only so much Breslow can do. There should be blame on his shoulders from the perspective of not adding enough — and specifically letting Alex Bregman walk. But no one could predict those five hitting around .200 and both Anthony and Crochet landing on the IL at the same time. That's a perfect storm of bad luck.
