The Boston Red Sox have had a very bad season so far. There's no denying that fact. But, a lot of the noise out there is just premature.
Boston is 22-30 on the season. That's bad. The offense in general has been bad. No one is saying the club has played like a contender so far this season. But the Red Sox are just three games out of an American League Wild Card and are going to get Roman Anthony Garrett Crochet back at some point. Getting those two back alone should be enough for a bit of optimism.
But instead, there has been a lot of noise out there over the last few days saying the Red Sox should simply sell off and look ahead. That is the opposite of what they should do right now. In professional sports, it's easy to be reactive. The last three games against the Minnesota Twins were bad, so the noise out there has been in response to that.
This doesn't take into account the whole picture, though. First and foremost, Red Sox president and chief executive officer Sam Kennedy has already said that Boston is looking to add. So, talking about selling off pieces is just a waste of time. Also, there is uncertainty in baseball in general beyond the 2026 season. Who knows what's going to happen with the collective bargaining agreement once it expires after the season? No one. So, punting on a season on May 25 is just a waste.
Boston has been bad, but there's a lot of season left. Let's take a breather.
