The New York Mets took yet another hit on Friday.
Two-time All-Star Clay Holmes, who has been off to an excellent start to the season for New York despite a rough season overall, was knocked out of his start for the club on Friday. He fractured his tibia after getting hit by a 111 miles per hour comebacker from New York Yankees slugger Spencer Jones.

Afterward, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reported that reliever Joey Gerber was promoted to replace him.
"Roster move: the Mets called up reliever Joey Gerber to replace Clay Holmes, who officially went on the injured list. Gerber adds an extra arm to the bullpen until the Mets next need a fifth starter on Wednesday," DiComo wrote.
The Mets can't take many more hits right now. Holmes is a double-whammy of a loss. He has been great so far this season and has a 2.39 ERA in nine starts. That's not all, though. With the 2026 Major League Baseball trade deadline under three months away, Holmes has been someone who has been speculated about as a potential trade candidate because of the overall struggles the Mets have dealt with. While an exact timeline hasn't been shared, this isn't great for Holmes or New York.
Holmes is in the second season of a three-year, $38 million deal and has a player option for the 2027 season.
