The Boston Red Sox cut ties with manager Alex Cora. While he may no longer be the guy for Boston, that doesn't mean that he won't be the guy for another team out there.
There has already been a lot of buzz out there with USA Today's Bob Nightengale specifically floating the Philadelphia Phillies as a fit for Cora. Over the next few weeks, there'll likely be a lot of buzz around Cora and other teams. But what would be the worst-case scenario for Boston? That arguably would be Cora landing with the Houston Astros.
Right now, the Astros are 11-18 on the season, which is one loss worse than the Red Sox. Boston is 11-17 on the season. Houston has talent, though. The Astros very well may have the future American League Most Valuable Player on their hands in Yordan Alvarez. He's leading the American League in hits, homers, RBIs, batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS. Plus, Houston has guys like Christian Walker, Isaac Paredes, Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, among others. There's talent there, but the pitching has been brutal for the club.
Cora was notably over in Houston before coming over to Boston. Imagine if he went back over there and turned the club around? There's a lot of season left, but the Red Sox have an uphill climb to get into playoff contention. The Astros are in the same boat. Imagine if these two teams were to turn it around and essentially duke it out for a Wild Card spot with Cora on the other side? This is a hypothetical situation, would be the worst-case option for the club.
Landing with any American League team wouldn't be great for Boston. Cora will find another job. Hopefully, it's in the National League.
