There have been a lot of things going wrong for the Boston Red Sox in 2026.
That has been talked about over and over and over again. By now, you've likely heard about the club's struggles. Boston somehow has the fourth-worst starter ERA in baseball so far at 5.40. That would be enough to have a tough start to the season. But it's not for Boston. The Red Sox not only have been allowing runs at a high clip, but they aren't scoring runs. Boston is tied for 23rd in the league with just 36 runs scored on the season so far.
The doom and gloom talk has been loud and consistent. Let's take a step away from that for a minute, though. There isn't a bigger bright spot for Boston right now than 26-year-old outfielder Wilyer Abreu.
Abreu has played in 10 games so far this season and is slashing .400/.415/.775 with a 1.190 OPS. Abreu also has hit three homers, driven in eight runs, hit four doubles, logged a triple and has scored six runs. Abreu is also leading the American League with 1.1 wins above replacement.
One thing that has stood out is the fact that Abreu has been having success against lefties as well. It was a story for much of his young career so far about Abreu not facing a lot of lefties. That isn't the case this season and he has shown he can handle the increased role. Abreu is 4-for-9 on the season so far against lefties. He's hitting everyone right now.
So, while the season hasn't gone as planned so far. Abreu is the guy fans can rally behind each night. Soon enough, things are going to turn for the better.
