Seiya Suzuki is one of the best hitters available in what is a weak class of free agents.
Specifically, this class is lacking right-handed power, and Suzuki can provide that for any team. He hit 113 home runs in five seasons with the Chicago Cubs and posted an OPS over .800 four times. Defense had always been an issue for him, but this year he had a plus-five outs above average in right field.
While plenty of teams could show interest, the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays need to make him their top priority.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are desperate for upgrades to their offense. Don Mattingly has already noted that the plan is for Bryce Harper to return to first base, meaning they could be targeting outfielders. Right now, their outfield is lacking any reliable options.
Brandon Marsh was an All-Star this year, but was terrible in the second half. Justin Crawford is still a work in progress as well. Adding Suzuki would not only give their lineup some much-needed pop from the right side, but also give them a new everyday option in right field.
They could also look at bringing back Luis Arraez. With Alec Bohm likely departing, Bryce Harper would no longer have to go to the outfield to accommodate Arraez.
Toronto Blue Jays
Anthony Santander's contract has been a disaster for the Blue Jays. They also moved on from Myles Straw recently. Right now, their best outfielders are Nathan Lukes and Brett Bateman.
Suzuki is reportedly already drawing interest from some in the Blue Jays front office, and adding him would not put them in a bind if Santander finally finds a way to stay on the field.
With George Springer possibly leaving, Santander could be the new designated hitter. The Blue Jays ranked dead last in home runs last season. Adding Suzuki will surely help.
