The New York Yankees seem likely to let Jazz Chisholm Jr. walk in free agency, meaning they could be on the hunt for an infielder.
The team seems to have confidence in Anthony Volpe, but they could use an upgrade at third base over McMahon. Depending on how much they trust Volpe to play third base, they could target second basemen on the open market to replace Chisholm, allowing Volpe to take over in the hot corner.
SNY's John Harper predicted that the Yankees would sign Luis Arraez.
"This feels like a move the Yanks really need to make," wrote Harper. "For a team that strikes out too much and never seems to get enough timely hitting in the postseason, Arraez offers an obvious solution as perhaps the best pure contact hitter in the majors."
Arraez is the antithesis of every other hitter on the Yankees. He struck out just 28 times last season, hit .310 and had a .765 OPS. He seems to be in contention for a batting title every season and would be a great hitter for the Yankees to have at the top of the lineup.
His one flaw has always been defense, and the Yankees cannot afford to get worse defensively. However, last season he posted a plus-12 outs above average, ranking in the 97th percentile.
There will be plenty of teams that show interest in him, but if the Yankees want to be aggressive this offseason, they may be willing to outbid every other contender.
He has a .316 career batting average, and his home run numbers could get a slight boost at Yankee Stadium.
