The Boston Red Sox were eliminated in the American League Wild Card Series by the New York Yankees, and the team will need to make some moves to build a team capable of making a deep run.
Willson Contreras made it clear what he thinks the team needs.
βI think we need some more offense,β he said, per the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham. βThatβs for (Craig) Breslow to figure out.β
The Red Sox have an every-day player at pretty much every position, but injuries held them back last season. They will have Caleb Durbin at third base, Trevor Story at shortstop, Curtis Mead at second base, Willson Contreras at first base, Adley Rutschman at catcher, Roman Anthony in left field, Ceddanne Rafaela in center field and Wilyer Abreu in right field.
Franklin Arias could take over at shortstop and the designated hitter spot could see plenty of faces through the year, but on paper they should have a good offense.
Last season, the Red Sox ranked 26th in home runs, 18th in OPS, 20th in slugging percentage and 23rd in runs. The offense was not good in 2026, but again, they need to be healthy.
Anthony and Story missed most of the season. Contreras was dealing with injuries. Mead was injured in his first game with the team. Durbin played the season with a pinky injury and a foot fracture.
Adding offense should be seen as a need, but perhaps the Red Sox should target depth pieces as opposed to stars. They could look to add a regular designated hitter and move on from Masataka Yoshida and Jarren Duran.
