Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy made a comment about the New York Yankees during his postgame celebrations.
While the players celebrated on the field, Jake Bauers came up to his manager and handed him the ball from the final out. Murphy embraced Bauers and made some comments about his free agency.
"Youβre gonna be a rich (expletive)," Murphy said to Bauers in a video posted by Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin. "Just remember when youβre on that horse (expletive) Yankees team and you guys are all playing for yourselves, just remember this is the way we used to do it.β
It seems like in the video, Murphy was unaware that the interaction was being filmed. In reality, his comments were probably not directed toward the Yankees, but rather big-market teams in general, who operate differently than the Brewers.
"He feels terrible Pat," Brewers closer Trevor Megill told Pat McAfee on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday.
"I'm sure he'll apologize to (Brian) Cashman and all the people over there. He genuinely feels terrible."
Murphy's Brewers had what he likes to call an uncommon mindset. Every player on the team was playing for each other rather than themselves, and it culminated in the greatest season in Brewers history. In an era defined by payroll, the Brewers took down the Dodgers and won the World Series without spending big.
Now, Bauers will be a free agent and should draw tons of interest. Unfortunately, the Brewers likely can no longer afford him.
