The New York Yankees need to upgrade the infield this offseason.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. didn't have a good season, and it won't be surprising to see the Yankees let him walk. However, they have Anthony Volpe to replace him. Volpe looked much better after being recalled from Triple-A after his demotion in August, and he has a real shot to be a starter on Opening Day.

The bigger concern for the Yankees is at third base, where Ryan McMahon has been a problem. He simply has not given the Yankees enough offensively, and making Josรฉ Caballero the everyday third baseman is simply not the solution. The options at third base this winter are limited, but the Yankees could move Volpe to third base full time and target a second baseman.

Among the available second basemen, Brandon Lowe may be the best target for the Yankees. He ranked in the 98th percentile for outs above average and slashed .260/.331/.493. He is a two-time All-Star, with both of his selections coming while he was on the Tampa Bay Rays. Going into the 2025 season, he had a .245 career batting average with a .812 OPS. However, that was with him playing half of his games at Tropicana Field, which has drawn complaints from hitters over the years for how difficult it is to see pitches.

However, in 2025, the Rays played at Steinbrenner Field and this year he was with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has 66 home runs in the last two seasons, and his batting average is .258. His OPS is around the same, but he has proven that he can be a star in a hitter-friendly environment.

Adding Lowe would give the Yankees a legit power threat at second base with an elite glove. Volpe would move to third base and hopefully build on what he did after being recalled this year. The Yankees know Lowe well from his time with the Rays and would love to have him on their side.

However, signing Lowe does not come without some risk. Although Yankee Stadium is a hitter-friendly ballpark, Lowe has not played well there in his career.
