The Boston Red Sox lost 9-2 in a win-or-go-home Game 2 against the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
The front office must now address the team's deficiencies in the offseason, and it could be looking for a new starting pitcher. They should have Garrett Crochet back, but they could be losing Sonny Gray. He has a $30 million mutual option for next season, which will surely be declined.
He had the best ERA among the Red Sox's starters this year, but he has mentioned that he will consider retirement. The 36-year-old has noted that if his family wants him at home, he will retire. However, if he decides to keep playing, he made it clear that he does not know if the Red Sox are a team he wants to stay with.
"I don't know," Gray said bluntly when asked if the Red Sox would be a destination he would be interested in if he decides to keep playing.
Before the Red Sox turned their season around, Gray was a hot name on the trade block. He noted then that he wanted to stay with the Red Sox, but refused to do the same after the season ended. Gray also voiced his displeasure with being taken out of the game in the fifth inning, saying he wanted to get through the order for a third time.
