The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9-0 on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series.
Cam Schlittler threw 117 pitches and recorded 19 outs without allowing a single run. That's the type of stuff a team wants from its ace in the biggest games, and Schlittler was up to the task. He has put together a special season, but he knows that it won't matter unless he gets the job done in the postseason.
"It's very well known that if you want to be a legend, which is obviously the goal, you've got to do it in the postseason," Schlittler said to reporters after the game. "Go out there and have dominant starts and put the team in the position to win."
The Yankees are one of the most storied franchises in sports, and have had no shortage of legendary players wear the uniform. Schlittler wants to be mentioned in the same breath as them, and to do that he has to leave his mark on the postseason.
Schlittler has now made three postseason starts, with two coming against the Red Sox. All of his postseason starts have been quality starts and he has a 0.87 ERA. The Yankees still have to win one more game to advance, but if they do, Schlittler will look to dominate once again against the Tampa Bay Rays.
