It was a disappointing season for the New York Mets, and the starting rotation was a huge problem.
The Mets got a 4.47 ERA from their starters this year, ranking 23rd in baseball. Nolan McLean was great, and Christian Scott and Zac Thornton showed flashes. The addition of Freddy Peralta did not pan out, and Kodai Senga could be moved to the bullpen full-time. The rotation is in need of help, and president of baseball operations David Stearns knows that.
"I do think it is necessary for us to add to our starting rotation," Stearns said on Monday.
Right now, the Mets' plan in the rotation is extremely uncertain. Luckily for Stearns, he has a very supportive owner who is not shy to spend big. Obviously, Tarik Skubal will be the big name in the pitching market this offseason, and the Mets are certainly a team that could land him.
The bottom line is, Stearns acknowledges that the Mets need to improve the rotation if they want to compete. Stearns noted that there is more than one way to fix the rotation, and that free agency is just one of them. He pointed to the team's need for depth and flexibility as well. It sounds like the Mets could be in the market for both frontline starters and depth this offseason.
