The way the Red Sox could fall to the No. 6 seed and end up playing the Houston Astros or Texas Rangers in the Wild Card Series is if there is a three-way tie at 85-77 between the Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox would have to lose out, the White Sox would have to win out and the Guardians would have to go 3-1.
If the White Sox win out and the Guardians go 3-1, beating the Red Sox on Thursday, the White Sox would win the American League Central by way of head-to-head record. If that happens, the Guardians would split the season series with the Red Sox, but have a better division record.
In that case, the Red Sox would drop to the No. 6 seed, and the Guardians would head to the Bronx for a Wild Card Series.
On paper, dropping to the No. 6 seed may be bettr for the Red Sox. They would play the Astros or Rangers in a best-of-three Wild Card Series. After that, they would face the White Sox in the American League Division Series. Right now, the Red Sox are on the side of the bracket with the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays.
The Yankees, Red Sox and Rays have been the three best teams in the American League this year. The Red Sox could avoid facing them until the American League Championship Series by being the No. 6 seed.
