Andy Green took over as the interim manager of the New York Mets when Carlos Mendoza was fired.
Green had reportedly made it known that he wanted to return to his front office role after the season and did not want to stay on as the manager of the Mets. However, in a surprising turn of events, he has agreed to a three-year extension with the Mets to become the full-time manager.
The Mets have gone 37-38 entering play on Tuesday with Green as the manager. Their roster has some flaws that need to be addressed, but it seems like what Green has done has earned the trust of the team. Players have had nothing but good things to say about Green since he took over.
"There were a lot of people within the Mets hoping Green would be the full-time manager," reported The Athletic's Will Sammon. "That includes players. Asked a couple Mets veterans recently what they wanted in a manager. Funny, in different conversations they offered the same one-word answer before adding more: 'Andy.'"
There have been some promising stretches of play under Green, but overall, the Mets have World Series aspirations. Having the right manager is a big part of achieving their goals, and they feel like Green is the man for the job. Now, David Stearns will have to fill the holes on the roster to make sure he has the players he needs to win it all.
