The Boston Red Sox are on the cusp of clinching a postseason spot, and it could happen as soon as Saturday.

Red Sox Magic Number: 3

The Red Sox's magic number is at three, after their series loss to the Texas Rangers.

The Red Sox are 5 games up on the final wild card spot, currently owned by the Cleveland Guardians. The Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays are each tied at two games back of the Guardians.

The Rangers and Blue Jays playing each other this weekend complicates things for the Red Sox's magic number, but here is how Friday's results could impact the Red Sox's magic number:

Baseball Now Summer Bundle
  • Red Sox and Rangers win: Magic number drops to 1
  • Red Sox and Blue Jays win: Magic number drops to 2
  • Red Sox lose and Rangers win: Magic number drops to 2
  • Red Sox lose and Blue Jays win: Magic number stays at 3

If the Red Sox and Rangers win on Friday, the Red Sox game on Saturday against the Rays could be to punch their ticket to the postseason.

The Red Sox are pretty much a lock to get in, but it's simply a matter of officially securing a spot. Not only are they pretty much a lock to get in, but they are practically locked into the No. 5 seed barring a crazy collapse.
