The New York Yankees will have a decision to make when Jazz Chisholm Jr. is back from the injured list.
Anthony Volpe is up in Chisholm's place, but he is looking like a completely different hitter after a stint in Triple-A. He has made some changes and is hitting .348/.400/.565 with a home run, two doubles, four stolen bases and seven RBIs. Before he was optioned, he had a .240 batting average and a .646 OPS with one home run in 56 games.
When Chisholm is back, he will go back to starting every day. Even though it's a down year for him, he had really turned things around before his injury. Before his injury, Chisholm was slashing .313/.398/.835 and had 10 stolen bases since Aug. 9.
If Volpe stays hot, the Yankees cannot really afford to keep him out of the lineup. On the other hand, they cannot bench Chisholm, who was swinging it well and has been a starter all year. What can they do then? Well, the Brewers could leave Volpe at second base and play Chisholm at third base.
Ryan McMahon has not been great at third base, and if Chisholm is swinging the bat like he was for a month before his injury, he would easily be the best option there. He is not as strong a defender there, but the Yankees would be much better offensively without McMahon in the lineup.
Of course, this is dependent on Volpe staying hot and Chisholm picking up where he left off. If both of those don't happen, it becomes a situation where the Yankees need to pick one or the other, and it seems like Chisholm would get the nod.
