This season has been a disappointment for the New York Mets, but things just keep getting worse.
On Tuesday night, Pete Alonso hit his 300th career home run, a ninth-inning game-tying solo home run that traveled deep into left field at Citi Field. Alonso is no stranger to hitting home runs at Citi Field, as he is the Mets franchise home run leader, but this one came in a different uniform. Mets fans erupted with "Fire David Stearns" chants shortly after.
President of Baseball Operations David Stearns has taken a ton of heat this season for his offseason decisions. Letting Alonso walk has proven to be a huge mistake, and Mets fans are still upset.
Alonso has 36 home runs this season and an American League-leading 101 RBIs. He has proven to be worth every penny and has not shown any real signs of decline. He and the Baltimore Orioles are still alive in the American League Wild Card race. Meanwhile, the Mets are eliminated from postseason contention.
Owner Steve Cohen has noted that he does not intend to fire Stearns and still believes in him. However, this is a results-based business, and the Mets have not been good for the last two years. After signing Juan Soto, missing the postseason even once may be enough reason for Stearns to be fired.
