The Los Angeles Dodgers' two biggest signings of the offseason, Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz, have not panned out so well.
Díaz has been a disaster for the Dodgers. He struggled to start the season, went on the injured list, came back and struggled again and is now back on the injured list. He is currently on a rehab assignment, but things are still not going well.
Díaz has an 11.85 ERA in the big leagues this year. He has simply not been able to figure things out, and he recently noted that he thinks tweaking his arm angle will help him get back on track. However, his most recent rehab assignment has been just as bad as before.
He has given up six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. He allowed five earned runs in his latest outing on Sunday. The lack of results poses a very important question for the Dodgers: should he be on the postseason roster?
The Dodgers bullpen has been a disaster for much of the year, but it's hard to argue that Díaz would actually make them better right now. In a postseason game, the Dodgers simply cannot trot him out in a save situation.
Perhaps the Dodgers have some faith that he can return to his All-Star form for the final stretch, but as of now, he has not shown that he will be able to do that. Blowing a game is bad enough as is, but blowing one in October comes with more weight.
