This year is the Yankees' 34th consecutive season with a winning record, making it the second-longest streak among the four major United States professional sports leagues. The longest streak of seasons with a winning record also belongs to the Yankees, from 1926 to 1964. The Yankees' last season with a losing record came in 1992.
Consistently finishing with a winning record simply means that the team is giving itself a chance at the postseason every year, but Aaron Judge, who made his much-anticipated return on Tuesday, knows the team has bigger goals.
"We're the Yankees, we're gonna win," Judge said after Tuesday's game. "That's a great streak, but everybody in this room is worried about championships."
The Yankees have made the World Series once in Judge's time with the team and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers and their superteam. Judge was great for the Yankees in the postseason last year, silencing many critics, but the Yankees were defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays.
This year, the Yankees are one of the best teams in baseball and have played without Judge for most of the season. They have a great opportunity to win the American League and get back to the Fall Classic. Judge is the Yankees captain, and he knows the goal is not just to have a good regular season.
