New York Yankees prospect Logan Maxwell has retired after just 30 games in the organization, per his transaction log.
Maxwell played one game of rookie ball and 26 games for Single-A Tampa. He had a .282/.386/.466 slash line and was actually seeing solid results as an undrafted player.
He missed most of May with an injury and has been out since late July with a different injury. There are few details on why he retired, but perhaps the injuries played a role.
Maxwell started his college career at Texas Christian University. He had a great three-year run there before transferring to the University of Arkansas. He posted a .356/.454/.605 slash line with 13 home runs. He collected 63 hits in 51 games.
He did not do enough to get drafted, but his early results for the Yankees suggested that he could be an absolute steal. However, now it seems like his baseball career has come to an end.
The retirement does not immediately impact the Yankees, but it certainly hurts. It's not uncommon for prospects to retire early, but Maxwell's retirement certainly comes as a surprise considering how he was hitting.
