The Toronto Blue Jays entered play on Thursday 1 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, and they are starting to get healthy as they inch toward a postseason spot.
Fans will be keeping an eye on the progress of Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber and Anthony Santander, but there is another name worth keeping an eye on. Luis Urías, who the Blue Jays acquired for cash in June, has been sent on a rehab assignment with Single-A Dunedin.
Urías was in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization earlier this year, but was stuck in the minor leagues. He had a .361/.393/.546 slash line with13 extra-base hits in Triple-A. The Blue Jays acquired him and immediately had him up in the big leagues. In 26 games, he had a .250 batting average and a .803 OPS. He had three home runs before going on the injured list with a quad strain.
He made 24 appearances at second base for the Blue Jays. Urías can play second base, third base and shortstop, so his versatility creates many ways for John Schneider to get him in the lineup when the team needs a right-handed bat.
He is in his ninth season, but his short stint with the Blue Jays has been his best showing in the big leagues since he was with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2022. He does have a 20-homer season and a 16-homer season under his belt, so he has some sneaky power he can bring to the lineup.
He is not necessarily great against lefties, but he is still a right-handed bat. He has a 1.011 OPS against right-handed pitching this season.
