The New York Yankees took three out of four games from the Boston Red Sox over the weekend, but Sunday's series finale has taken over headlines for WEEI radio's Will Flemming making some controversial comments while doing play-by-play of the game.
After Jazz Chisholm Jr. stole two bases in the eighth inning, with the Yankees leading by six runs, Flemming suggested that the Red Sox pitcher at the time, Jovani Morán, "drill" Austin Wells and "fight" Chisholm as Wells rounded the bases after a home run.
"He needs to stay out of that and not be telling people to throw at players and injure players,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said on Monday, per The Athletic's Chris Kirschner. “That’s not what this game’s about.
“Not too happy hearing broadcasters talking about trying to injure or hurt players. He needs to clean that up.”
Flemming was not a fan of Chisholm stealing bases with such a big lead and called him "bush league." According to Kirschner, it was Aaron Boone's call to steal the bases there, but that's neither here nor there. A broadcaster suggesting that the Red Sox try to hurt some of the Yankees players is a bigger problem.
Judge has missed most of the season, but he is still the Yankees' leader. He may not have been playing, but he did not take Flemming's comments lightly. The next time the Red Sox face the Yankees, there's a good chance Judge will be in the lineup, and that game could be in October.
