The Boston Red Sox made a blockbuster trade for Adley Rutschman at the trade deadline, giving up Kyson Witherspoon, Enddy Azocar, Carlos Narváez, Anthony Eyanson and Harold Rivas.
Rutschman was rehabbing from a wrist injury when the Red Sox got him, but now he is dealing with a new injury. He hyperextended his elbow on Aug. 24 against the Miami Marlins. He missed the next two games, but was back in the lineup after that.
The Red Sox kept him out of the lineup in one of the games of Saturday's doubleheader. He has not been in the lineup for either of the games against the Seattle Mariners this week, and Chad Tracy reportedly noted that the injury will likely be something that's an issue for the rest of the season.
"Chad Tracy said on WEEI that Adley Rutschman's hyperextended elbow is still an issue and probably will be for the rest of the season," reported The Boston Globe's Tim Healey on X.
Rutschman was supposed to represent a huge upgrade at catcher for the Red Sox, but he has not hit well so far. He has a .500 OPS in 15 games with the Red Sox, but he has shown some positive signs lately. He had a three-hit game in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Red Sox may give him some extra off days down the stretch, but it's less than ideal that he isn't healthy. The Red Sox gave up a lot to get him, and they were expecting him to perform like an All-Star catcher.
