The Boston Red Sox placed Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a left hamstring strain.
Contreras exited Sunday's blowout loss in the seventh inning with hamstring tightness. At the time, interim manager Chad Tracy explained that move as precautionary based on where the game was at. However, it seems like they now feel it is best to give him 10 days off, at least. He has been managing the hamstring injury for a while now.
βI donβt want to paint the picture that something way worse happened. Just a recurring of the same thing,β said Tracy, per MassLive's Chris Cotillo. βThe thought of continuing down this road of trying two days (off) or three days (off) and youβre playing shorthanded, it just became apparent to give it the time it needs to heal. We didnβt have a huge setback or anything as far as where itβs been, so Iβm hopeful that itβs that amount of time and we get him back and heβs able to play the game full bore like he likes to do.β
Contreras' injury has led to some plays where he has not run as hard to first base as fans would like, resulting in boos. However, he has noted that he had permission from the coaches to run as he sees fit in order to stay healthy in some of those instances.
The team could have given him a couple of days off without making a roster move, but Tracy felt that it was best to get a replacement on the roster. Mickey Gasper was brought back up as the corresponding move. He was just sent down on Sunday to make room for Roman Anthony and Trevor Story.
