Adley Rutschman has not been in the lineup for the last two games for the Boston Red Sox after irritating his elbow on an aggressive swing on Monday.
“He took a really aggressive swing,” Tracy said before Tuesday’s game, per MLB.com's Perla Paredes. “He kind of hyperextended his elbow. Nothing to be alarmed about. Just felt like I don't want to make that worse.”
Well, the Red Sox gave him two games off, and the team had an off day on Thursday. If he's not back in the lineup on Friday against the New York Yankees, there may be a reason to worry. The team seems to be playing it safe, and even reportedly signed some catching depth on Friday.
MassLive's Chris Cotillo confirmed a Nick John report noting that the team has signed minor league catcher Tomás Nido.
Nido played in 37 games for the Detroit Tigers last season, but has been in Triple-A all year. He was released on July 21, and will now give the Red Sox some veteran depth in the minor leagues should something happen to Rutschman or Connor Wong.
Nido was with the New York Mets for eight seasons and has played in 333 big-league games. He has 17 career home runs and a .560 career OPS. He is not a star by any means, but is a risk-free depth addition to the Red Sox as they eye a deep run in October.
